Here's how to do it:

Dip your brush into the paint and then dip that same brush into water before applying to fabric. Misting your fabric first with a bit of water helps too.) Just repeat until all the fabric is coated. The water helps the fabric absorb the paint evenly. You may need more than one coat. Once dry, waxing is your next option.
